Project Information:
Annual ecological monitoring and environmental audit of environmentally sensitive restricted and rehabilitation areas associated with an active mining operation in the Northern Cape. The project assessed the condition of terrestrial habitats, monitored biodiversity, and evaluated the effectiveness of environmental management measures to ensure compliance with mining licence conditions and the long-term protection of sensitive ecosystems.
Approach
ENVASS conducted vegetation monitoring using permanent quadrats, faunal surveys through direct and indirect observations (including spoor, burrows, and dung), habitat condition assessments, and inspections for mining-related impacts within restricted areas. Results were compared with previous years’ monitoring data to identify changes in vegetation cover, species diversity, habitat condition, and overall ecological trends.
Outcome
The monitoring confirmed the condition of sensitive habitats, identified ecological trends over time, and provided practical recommendations for ongoing environmental management, rehabilitation, and biodiversity conservation. The assessment supported regulatory compliance while helping the client protect the ecological integrity of environmentally sensitive areas throughout the life of the mining operation.
