Wetland and Aquatic

We offer a comprehensive suite of Wetland and Aquatic services designed to assess, protect, and manage vital freshwater ecosystems. Our offerings include Wetland and Aquatic Screening Studies, Baseline and Impact Assessments for watercourses, and accurate Wetland Delineation and Classification to inform development planning. Through Aquatic SASS5 Biomonitoring and the VEGRAI (Vegetation Response Assessment Index), we monitor the health and functionality of ecosystems, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations. Our Conceptual Rehabilitation Management and Monitoring Programmes further support long-term ecological restoration and sustainability.

Key Services Offered by the ENVASS Aquatic Health Division

We identify, evaluate and interpret potential impacts of proposed developments on aquatic biodiversity. Assessments consider habitat integrity, species composition and ecological functioning to support informed decision making, regulatory compliance and sustainable development outcomes.

We accurately delineate rivers, streams, wetlands and associated riparian zones using accepted best practice and regulatory guidelines. This ensures legal compliance, informs development layout planning and supports appropriate buffer and protection measures.

We assess the ecological condition and functionality of river systems by integrating habitat, biotic and water quality information. These assessments provide a clear understanding of current river health and support conservation planning, impact assessments and management interventions.

We apply a range of nationally recognised and ISO-accredited indices and methodologies to assess aquatic ecosystem health. These include SASS5 (South African Scoring System Version 5), IHI (Index of Habitat Integrity), VEGRAI (Riparian Vegetation Assessment Index), IHAS (Integrated Habitat Assessment System), FRAI (Fish Response Assessment Index), MIRAI (Macroinvertebrate Response Assessment Index) and SADI (South African Diatom Index), allowing for robust, defensible ecological assessments.

We investigate the relationship between soils, geology and hydrology to understand water movement and storage within landscapes. These assessments support wetland identification, impact assessments and sustainable land and water use planning.

We identify flood-prone areas by analysing hydrological and hydraulic characteristics of watercourses. The results inform risk management, infrastructure placement and development planning in accordance with regulatory requirements.

We design practical, site-specific rehabilitation and management plans aimed at restoring degraded aquatic ecosystems and wetlands. Plans focus on improving ecological functionality, stabilising habitats and promoting long-term sustainability.

To support and strengthen aquatic assessments, we also offer a range of specialist analyses, including: • In situ water quality testing

• Chemical and nutrient profiling

• Sediment quality and toxicity assessments

• Environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis
