Market:
Construction
Location:
Cape Town
Project Objective:
To provide Environmental Control Officer (ECO) services during the construction of the hosting infrastructure system, ensuring that construction activities comply with the approved Environmental Management Programme (EMPr), applicable environmental legislation and relevant authorisation conditions. The objective was to monitor environmental performance, identify potential environmental risks and ensure that appropriate mitigation measures were implemented throughout the construction phase.
Project Execution Strategy:
ECO services were undertaken through regular site inspections, environmental compliance monitoring and the assessment of construction activities against the approved EMPr and applicable environmental requirements. Inspections focused on key environmental aspects, including waste management, pollution prevention, hazardous substance handling, dust control, stormwater management, erosion prevention, vegetation protection and site housekeeping. Environmental observations and non-compliances were documented in inspection reports, with corrective actions and recommendations communicated to the appointed contractors and relevant stakeholders. Follow-up inspections were conducted to assess the implementation of corrective measures and promote ongoing compliance throughout the construction phase.
Project Key Achievements:
ECO monitoring supported the implementation of environmental mitigation measures and promoted compliance with the approved EMPr and applicable environmental requirements. Regular inspections facilitated the early identification of environmental risks and non-compliances, enabling corrective actions to be communicated and monitored. The project also supported improved environmental awareness among construction personnel, responsible site management and the prevention of potential environmental impacts associated with construction activities.
